Cute x2! Special Considerations for Newborn Photos with Twins
I love newborn photography for several reasons, but the fact that I get to spend the day with an adorable little baby might be the biggest one. So when I get the opportunity to take newborn photos for twins, it’s double the cuteness and double the joy! Ever wondered what goes into a twin newborn photo session and how it’s different from a newborn session with one baby? Here’s a peek.
Coordinating Outfits and Accessories
In most newborn portraits, I’m coordinating the baby’s wrap and accessories with the background of each photo. But when there are two babies, they have to coordinate with each other too. Some parents love their twins to match while others prefer contrasting yet complementing colors. For example, I might put one twin in a tan wrap with an ivory cap while the other twin wears an ivory wrap with a tan cap. I’ll gladly put together any “wardrobe” and color scheme you love as long as I have the supplies for both babies.
Capture That Special Bond
Most newborn photo shoots focus on highlighting all the beautiful details of your new little one - how precious they look when they sleep, their tiny fingers and toes, and everything else about them that just warms your heart. While I do plenty of this in twins’ newborn sessions, I also have something especially unique to highlight: the one-of-a-kind bond between these two who have truly been together since day one. Is there anything sweeter than a portrait of two newborns nestled together?
Managing Medical Needs
As special as it is to photograph newborn twins, it does come with some added challenges. Twins are usually preemies and tend to be small at birth, so we expect them to spend more time in the hospital. This might mean we have to wait longer after their birth before they’re ready for newborn photos (usually newborn portraits are taken between 5 and 21 days old). It might also mean working around medication schedules or medical devices. Whatever the case is, rest assured that I’ll adjust in whatever way I need to so your babies get amazing newborn portraits.
Keeping Two Babies Asleep
Parents of twins, or just little ones who are close in age, know this struggle well! Ideally, I try to keep babies asleep for as much of their photo session as possible. Not only are they easier to pose and dress when they’re asleep but it gives you the sweet sleepy photos every parent loves. Unsurprisingly, this is more difficult with twins because when one wakes up, the other probably will too. This means that I may need to ask for your help more often during the session so we can soothe both babies at the same time.
