How to Choose a Color Scheme for Your Newborn Photos

Seattle Newborn Photographer Jaimie Birtel Photography

Your newborn photos are so much more than pictures of your cute baby. They should be sentimental heirlooms that bring your mind back to this amazing time in your life as well as stunning custom artwork that you’re eager to display in your home. As a photographer, what I provide is art as much as it is a service for your family. With that in mind, let’s talk about the color scheme for your newborn photos, why it matters, and how to find the perfect color scheme for your newborn photo shoot.

Why Your Color Scheme Matters for Your Newborn Photos

For the most part, newborn photos are visually quite simple. There typically aren’t many props or details because the focus is on your little one. While there might not be complicated sets to create, the color scheme of your newborn photo shoot is so important to the finished portraits.

Remember, your newborn photos should be pieces of art. We want them to complement your aesthetic just as well as a piece of art you would buy for decoration. Your newborn photography color scheme allows your portraits to fit perfectly into your home’s decor.

On top of this, the color scheme affects the overall look and feel of your portraits. Delicate pastels, bold and rich colors, classic neutrals - all of these will give your newborn photos a different feel.

How We Choose Your Newborn Photo Shoot Color Scheme

Considering how much your color scheme will affect your finished portraits, how do you even begin to choose the right colors for your newborn photos? That’s the beauty of the experience I provide with my Seattle-area photo studio: you don’t have to!

For every client, I schedule an in-home consultation to talk about what you want for your portraits. We’ll talk about your personal style and, most importantly, I’ll ask you to show me where you want to display your newborn photos. This lets me pick out the perfect shades and looks so that your newborn portraits are just as suited to your space as any other custom artwork you would commission for your home. I provide a full-service experience so you can relax and I’ll design and create the perfect portraits for your home.

Why Some Color Choices May Change After Your Consultation

Keep in mind that while I’ll have a color palette in mind when I leave your in-home consultation, I may need to adjust it a bit during your photo session to flatter your baby’s skin tone. Some newborns are born more red or pink, some newborns are slightly jaundiced so they have a yellow tone to their skin, and so on. In these cases, I may adjust the color palette to avoid colors that make these colors stand out, instead focusing on colors that enhance their natural skin tone and bring out their best features.
