Is Your Home Suitable for Lifestyle Newborn Photography?

When I’m doing the honor of creating a beautiful family’s newborn photos, I offer the option to come to you and take portraits of your family and your precious little one in your own home. This type of session is called lifestyle newborn photography. So many of my clients see those in-home portraits and worry, “Does my home look good enough for lifestyle photos? Is that really an option for me?”

Here’s the short answer: you don’t have to have a perfect, magazine-ready home for lifestyle newborn photography! In fact, none of my clients have a perfect home…it’s just my job to make it look that way in their portraits. If you’re wondering whether your home is an option for your newborn photos, here are a few questions you should consider.

How Much Light Do You Have?

Natural light looks absolutely stunning in photos, especially in newborn photos when we really want that delicate and airy look. The more natural light you have in your home, the better! It’s ideal if you have at least one or two spaces in the home that get a lot of natural light. If your home doesn’t take in as much light as you would like, though, I have ways to adjust the lighting, so it may not be a deal-breaker.

Do You Have One or Two Lovely Spaces?

You don’t need your entire home to look like it’s straight from the pages of Better Homes and Gardens to have a beautiful lifestyle newborn photo session. All I need are a couple of spaces that are camera-ready. For most families, I stick to the nursery, living room, and potentially the primary bedroom.

As far as the rest of the home is concerned, there’s no need to make any preparations for me! As a mom of three, I know how impossible it is to keep your home as tidy and polished as you’d like it to be when you have young kids or babies - you won’t get any judgment from me!

Does Your Decor Match the Portrait Style You Want?

Some families have a more specific vision for their newborn photos than others, but you probably have at least an idea of the overall style you want. Because your home will create the background for your lifestyle portraits, you want to make sure the decor in your home (specifically in the well-lit areas where we’ll be taking your photos) aligns with the style you want for your portraits. For instance, if you want a light and airy look for your newborn photos but your home’s decor has more of a darker, bolder design, we may not be able to create the look you want.
