Questions to Ask Your Family Photographer
As both a mom and a photographer, I can sympathize with all the moms who are stressed about family portraits. A family photo session is a big deal! You want it to be a great experience for your family and you want to love your portraits. The first step to a successful photo session is hiring a photographer who’s the right fit for your family, and knowing what questions to ask can go a long way. So, to make it easier to book your next photo shoot, here are the top questions you want to ask.
What Types of Photography Do You Specialize In?
Did you know that photography skills and techniques can be very different from one type of photography to the next? For example, the styles and skills used in wedding photography and event photography are different from the techniques used in portrait photography. For your family photo session, make sure your photographer specializes in family photography or portrait photography. For example, I’m specifically a portrait photographer but I offer family photography as well as maternity photography, newborn photography, senior photography, and boudoir photography.
How Would You Describe a Typical Photo Session with You?
When you look back on your family portraits in the years to come, you’ll remember what the session was like and you want those to be happy memories. Plus, photos just turn out better when you’re having fun! Ask your photographer what their sessions are like. In my case, I always keep the mood light and fun - we joke around, we become friends, and we all have a great time making beautiful memories for your family.
What Can I Expect from Your Process?
Just as every photographer’s style during the session is unique, every photographer has their own process too. For example, does your photographer do all the planning via email and questionnaires or will you have a consultation with them? When your portraits are ready, do you meet with them to see your photos and place your order, or do they do this digitally? About how long after your session can you expect to see your portraits? Asking about their process lets you know what to expect and also lets you know if your priorities are aligned with theirs.
How Do You Help My Family Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera?
Both kids and adults can be a bit camera-shy, and part of a photographer’s job is to help you all feel comfortable. Talk to your photographer about what this looks like. In my studio, I’ve found that having a phone consultation with you helps us get to know each other so you’re more at ease when we meet, and when you’re less stressed, your kids are too. Of course, I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve for coaxing some smiles out of shy kids too.
