What to Wear for a Winter Family Photo Session

Winter in the Seattle area is absolutely stunning, and it can create the perfect backdrop for a lovely family photography session. If family portraits are in your winter plans this year, it’s never too early to start thinking about what to wear. I’ll help you plan your wardrobe, but here are a few tips to get you started.

Opt for Jewel Tones and Neutrals

Jewel tones are rich, deep colors, and they get their name because they’re similar to gemstone colors. Jewel tones include colors like emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, and amethyst purple. These types of rich colors look phenomenal against a winter background, so they’re perfect for your winter family photos.

It’s best to start by choosing one or two core colors. Then, use complementing neutrals alongside those colors.

Layer Up!

Layers are fantastic for any photo shoot wardrobe because they add texture to your look and they give us lots of options to easily have a variety of looks. Winter lends itself especially well to layered outfits.

There are plenty of ways to do this, like a sweater layered over a button-down shirt. It’s also a good idea to bring wintery layers like a scarf, a nice winter coat, a beanie or winter hat, and so on.

Stick to Walkable Footwear

For outdoor photo shoot locations, I try to make them as accessible as possible, but keep in mind that you’ll probably be walking on dirt or through a bit of snow. Choose footwear that complements your outfit but is also comfortable, warm, and walkable on wintery terrain. We don’t want you to fall or have frozen feet by the end of your session!

Start with the Hardest Person to Dress

Not sure where to begin with planning your family’s wardrobe? I suggest starting with the person who has the most specific fashion sense or who is the most difficult to find the right outfit for. In most families, that’s Mom. As you’re choosing your color scheme, start by choosing or finding an outfit you love. Then you can draw from the colors in that outfit to put together complementing outfits for everyone else who’s a bit easier to dress or shop for.
