When to Book Your Maternity Photography Session

Timing is important when it comes to booking your maternity portrait photography. After all, your body is changing from one day to the next in the course of its amazing work. When in your pregnancy is the best time for maternity photography and how far in advance should you book? Don’t worry, I have all the answers you need.

When Should Your Maternity Photo Session Take Place?

Ideally, I recommend maternity photography between 28 weeks and 34 weeks into your pregnancy. Yes, that timeframe is specific for a reason! At this point in your pregnancy, your baby bump is typically very pronounced so we can highlight your gorgeous maternity form. However, this isn’t so late in your pregnancy that you’re likely to be too uncomfortable to enjoy the photo session. It’s that perfect sweet spot we’re aiming for.

When Should You Book Your Maternity Photo Session?

You may already know that photographers’ schedules can book up months in advance. So when should you start working on booking your maternity session to make sure you can get your session during that ideal window?

It’s best to reach out to your photographer a couple of months before you want your session to take place. A good benchmark is to reach out around the beginning of your second trimester.

As a mom myself, I recognize that life preparing for your baby is busy. It’s easy to forget about scheduling maternity photos until you’re well into your second trimester or beyond. If that’s the case, please still reach out to me anyway! There’s always a chance that I may have cancellations or short-notice openings in my schedule, so it’s worth a quick email to find out.

What If You Deliver Your Baby Early?

Delivering too early for maternity photos is a common concern among moms-to-be. This is another reason to aim for 28-34 weeks for your photo session: in most cases, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll deliver that early.

With that said, though, some moms already know they have a higher risk for delivering early, such as if you’re pregnant with twins or multiples, or if you are at risk for certain complications that could lead to an early delivery. If so, just let me know when we’re scheduling your maternity session and we’ll schedule your session for closer to 28 weeks than 34.
