Is it time for you to get your senior photo session on the books? When should you start planning for that special milestone photo shoot for your teenager? As a portrait photographer in the Seattle area who has the honor of creating these amazing memories for budding adults every year, I’m here to help! Here are a few tips and considerations to keep in mind as you’re scheduling your teen’s senior photos.

Most Popular Times for Senior Photo Sessions

When do most teenagers have their senior portraits taken? It can vary from one family and one school to another. Most, though, have their photo sessions in the summer before their senior year or in the fall that begins their senior year. You might also opt for the spring that ends your junior year.

Choose the Time of Year Based on Your Dream Look

As you’re deciding when you book your child’s senior photos, one way to decide is based on the look they have in mind. For example, if they love a moody and dramatic or cozy look, then fall might be the best choice. If they’re aiming for more of a light and sunny look, then aim for the spring or summer before their senior year.

Be Mindful of Deadlines

In the midst of dreaming up those beautiful senior portraits, don’t forget to take logistics into account! Find out when your child needs to submit their senior photo for their yearbook or to other places or groups that might need it.

Don’t forget to allow for editing time after your session. If you need to submit a physical photo, make sure to also allow time for ordering and printing.

Plan to Book Well in Advance

You need some cushion time after your photo session but make sure you plan for some cushioning time before the session too. Photographers often book up a few months in advance, so call to schedule your session at least a couple of months before you want to take your portraits.
