Booking a Senior Portrait Photographer? Ask Them These Questions First

You and your child will only have one senior photo session, and making it a success starts with hiring the right photographer. I encourage every family to take some time to find a senior photographer who’s a good fit for them and what they’re looking for from the portraits and the experience. To find out if you’ve found a good fit, these are the top questions I recommend asking your senior photographer.

What is Included in the Senior Portrait Session?

Sessions can vary so much from one photographer to the next! One photographer might only include one or two outfits in the studio while another might include a lot more outfits in several different locations. Getting these details will help you know whether you’re booking an experience that you’ll be happy with. If you’re comparing prices with different photographers, this also lets you compare accurately.

What’s Your Photography Style for Senior Photos?

As you’re looking around for a senior photographer, make sure you look through a gallery of each photographer’s work. You’ll notice that every photographer has their own aesthetic and feel to their portraits, just like every artist has their own style. As much as your photographer may customize your session, all the portraits will still be within their own style, so make sure you choose a photographer whose work you and your teenager love.

What’s the Planning Process for My Senior Photos?

Your senior portraits are all about honoring this milestone in your teenager’s life and chronicling who they are at this stage of life. For that reason, the session should be fully customized to you and your teenager’s vision. In the case of my Seattle area photo studio, I do a dedicated in-person or Zoom consultation with every client. You’ll have my full and undivided attention as we chat about how you want your portraits to look, what hobbies and activities you want to feature, what to wear, and more. But some photographers take a more streamlined and less customized approach, so make sure you ask about the planning process.

What Kinds of Prints and Products Do You Offer?

Your child’s senior portraits should be a lifelong reminder of this exciting and transitional time in life, but to do that, they need to last a lifetime. That comes from quality. At my photo studio I offer premium, high quality products like framed prints, canvases, and albums. You don’t have to choose your products until after you see your images, but it’s a good idea to ask in advance so you know that your photographer can offer you quality prints that will last.
