Never Too Grown: Why You Should Still Take Family Portraits with Your Adult Children

A lot of families get family portraits taken on a regular basis when their kids are little, and these are precious keepsakes that I know you treasure so deeply! But what often happens is that families take portraits less and less often as their kids become teenagers, and then when their kids are grown and no longer living with their parents, they stop taking family photos. And yet, as a family photographer, some of the family photo sessions that my clients appreciate most are those for families with adult children. Here’s why!

Capturing Each Chapter of Life

Life might be quieter around your home when your kids grow up and move out, but that’s when some of the biggest and most exciting changes in your family’s life happen too! So much can change from one year to the next when your kids are adults. They could get married, have children, move somewhere new, graduate from college, take on a new career, and the list goes on. Having family portraits from each chapter of your family’s story will let you look back on that story and revisit those memories as the years go by.

Keeping Mementoes in Your Home

It’s actually funny when you think about it - it’s common for families to have family portraits in their home when their kids are little, but it’s less common when their kids are grown up even though these are the years when they don’t see their kids every day because they aren’t living at home. It’s so special to have updated portraits in your home when your kids are adults because then you can still see their faces every day, even if they’re hundreds of miles away.

Getting Family Portraits for Everyone

The main purpose of your family photo session might be to get portraits of the entire family together, but when my client is a family with adult children, I also make sure to take portraits of each individual, couple, and young family. This way your kids each get professional portraits of themselves and portraits with their spouse and/or children too. They’ll all love having these special photos but they may not set aside time to have their own portraits taken otherwise, so everyone will appreciate and benefit from this photo session.

Having Portraits Ready for Gifts and Holiday Cards

This one’s a bit more practical, but it’s a reason nonetheless! Family portraits can make wonderful gifts for your adult children (or gifts from them to you), and if you send out holiday cards, it’s always a challenge to find a great photo of everyone too. With regular family portrait sessions, you’ll always have a beautiful, professional portrait ready to use.

Making Time for Family Portraits with Your Adult Children

It’s true that it can be difficult to coordinate a family photo session when your kids are grown up, because they all have their own lives and schedules, and they may live far away as well. But trust me when I say that it’s well worth the effort! I’ll never forget a client of mine who gifted her mom a family portrait session as a retirement gift - the joy and excitement on that proud mother’s face were unforgettable!
