Questions to Ask Your Headshot Photographer
If you’re planning to give your business or your career a boost in 2025, fresh headshots are an excellent step toward that goal. A great headshot helps you make your business feel more personal to your clients or customers because it puts a friendly face on the person behind the magic - you. But as you’re hiring a headshot photographer, make sure you’ve found the right fit by asking these key questions.
What Can I Expect from a Headshot Photography Experience with You?
Every photographer has a different process. We each differ in how we do consultations and session design, how we do the sessions themselves, and so on. Ask your photographer what their process is like to make sure it aligns with what you want. In my case, for example, I do a personal phone consultation with every client to talk through what your session will look like and plan a session with you that puts your brand forward. During your session, you’ll have my undivided attention and my expert guidance through every pose.
How Customized are Your Headshots?
Headshots aren’t like driver’s license photos, just a simple picture of your face. The style matters! Headshots contribute to your personal brand and your professional image, so they need to be designed in a way that creates the image you want to portray. That’s why I don’t do “cookie cutter” headshot photos - each session is unique to the client. Ask your photographer how they customize their sessions. Or, better yet, explain the personal brand you want to cultivate and ask the photographer if they feel like they can create that in your headshots.
What Does Your Headshot Photo Session Fee Include?
It’s always important to know what you’re getting! In many cases, the session fee just covers the photographer’s time and talent in your session. At my Mercer Island studio, though, as part of my mission to create a photography experience that is stress-free and enjoyable for you, I include free hair and makeup styling in every session including headshots so you don’t have to worry about those finishing touches. My sessions also include complimentary wardrobe styling and my expertise to guide you before and during your photo session.
How Long Will My Photo Shoot Be?
Some photographers have specific time limits for different service levels, like a 30-minute session or a one-hour session. While I have general time estimates in mind for each session, my focus is on quality and making sure that we get all the shots we want. We can talk about time frame expectations when we’re scheduling your session, but know that your session is about capturing the best looks and not watching the clock.
