Questions to Ask Your Maternity Photographer
Your maternity portraits should be relics that you treasure for a lifetime! At the risk of sounding too alarmist, though, you only really get one chance at maternity photos for each pregnancy. There’s a specific timeframe in your pregnancy that’s perfect for maternity photography and if you book a session and aren’t happy with your photos, chances are you won’t be able to get another session before your baby’s born or before you’re too uncomfortable to enjoy your photo shoot. As a Seattle area maternity photographer, these are the questions I recommend asking to make sure the photographer you’re booking is the right fit for you.
How Much Maternity Photography Have You Done?
Maternity photography has its own set of techniques for bringing out your baby's glow, highlighting your beauty in pregnancy, and creating portraits that portray the strength and femininity of the motherhood journey. These are skills that need training and practice. So as much as you might have loved your wedding photographer, or as much as you might want to support your niece’s new photography business, the milestone of maternity portraits is worth hiring someone who lists maternity among their specialties.
What’s Included in My Maternity Photo Session?
Budget is always a factor when you’re choosing a photographer, but it’s important to get all the information to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. For example, my session fee for maternity photography isn’t just for a few hours of my time to take your photos. It gives you a personal consultation to plan your session, access to my client closet of luxury maternity gowns, professional hair and makeup services, my expertise in styling and posing every shot as well as editing your photos, and my services to help you create and order quality printed portraits.
What Should I Bring to My Maternity Photo Shoot?
This goes along with asking questions that tell you how much value a photographer brings to the table. If you have to plan, buy, and bring your wardrobe for the entire photo shoot, that takes time and money. At my Mercer Island studio, I make your session as easy on you as possible (after all, you’re already doing the important job of creating a new life, you’re busy!) by having extensive options for you in my client closet. The only things you need to bring to your session are any special items you want to incorporate into your portraits and your preferred undergarments.
How Do I Receive My Maternity Portraits?
I’ll make sure you have digital files so you can share away on social media but I’ll also help you plan out how you want to enjoy your portraits, whether it’s a framed print in your bedroom or a portrait in your nursery or an album, and I’ll help you design and order your products so they’ll arrive beautifully done and ready to grace your home.
