What To Wear For Spring Photo Shoots

Spring is such a beautiful time for outdoor photo shoots! The landscape is coming alive all around you and all the spring colors in the flowers and trees create a stunning backdrop for portraits. If you’re planning to take advantage of this gorgeous season for family portraits, maternity photos, or other custom photography, I’m here to plan your dream photo session with you. To give you a head start, here are a few tips for what to wear for spring photo shoots.

Think Earthy

Family Photographer in Seattle

When people think of spring, they think of bright colors, maybe even floral patterns, and that’s great when you’re dressing for a spring outing or event. But when it comes to photos, wearing bright colors and patterns can clash with the colorful landscape around you. We want your outfit to complement the springtime setting, not blend in with it. Earthy tones can complement spring backgrounds beautifully, like cream, sage green, golden yellow, rust orange, and muted brown.

Go Light and Delicate

Spring is also an excellent time for light, delicate colors. While deep and rich colors are perfect for winter, spring is all about revitalization and new life. Light, soft colors look fantastic in a spring setting. Soft pink is a popular favorite, and muted peach, powder blue, and dusty lavender are excellent choices too.

Add Thin Layers

Layered wardrobes are one of the top pieces of advice photographers give to clients. Layers add texture, dimension, and versatility to your portraits. Plus, there’s often still a chill in the air during spring, so layers can be comfortable and temperature-appropriate. For spring photos, opt for layers that are more thin than heavy and have a light color. Some favorites are a tan jacket, thin cardigan, or gray or tan vest.

Go with the Flow

For many photo sessions, structured pieces are best because the clothes will lay in a consistent way. While there’s nothing wrong with wearing clothing that has some structure to it for a spring session, this is also a season when flowy, airy outfits look beautiful on camera. For women, flowy dresses have a tendency to catch the spring breeze in a truly stunning way, and they capture the lighthearted and refreshed feeling of spring.
