Summer is a wonderful time to update your family portraits! In the Seattle area, we have so many beautiful settings to choose from, from beaches to mountains to woodlands, so there’s something for every style. If you’re planning a family photo session this summer, you might already be thinking about the family’s wardrobe. What should you wear for summer family photos?

If you’re my client, you don’t have to worry! Before your session, I’ll come to your home for a consultation to plan the details of your portraits. During that consultation, I’ll give you hands-on styling and even check out your closets with you to pick out the perfect outfits for everyone.

Still, it can be helpful to start thinking about ideas, so here are my top tips for your summer family photo wardrobe.

What to Wear for Summer Family Photos

Photography wardrobes aren’t one-size-fits-all, and you want to make sure everyone is wearing something they’re comfortable and confident in. But with that said, here are some suggestions to keep in mind:

  • Flowy, lightweight dresses and skirts

  • Linen shorts or linen pants

  • Khaki shorts with clean and minimalist T-shirts

  • Lace tops or dresses

  • Jeans

  • Linen or lightweight short-sleeved shirts

Tips for Your Summer Photography Wardrobe

The suggestions above can help you pull some ideas for your photo session, but they’re intentionally broad because every photo session has a different look and style. These extra tips can help your planning too.

Choose a Color Scheme That Isn’t Overpowering

Your wardrobe should complement your family’s appearance but it should distract from the main focal point: your beautiful faces and smiles. Muted colors are a great choice for a summer photo session. If you do want to bring in a bolder color, make sure you balance it with other colors that are muted or neutrals.

Make Comfort a Priority

I know you want everyone to look their best, but comfort matters too! I want you and your kids to not only be physically comfortable but also emotionally comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. You’ll each be able to relax more and feel more like yourself, and that’s the recipe for getting beautiful and genuine family joy into your photos.

Replace Layers with Textured Clothes

Layers are a go-to for planning a photo session wardrobe because they add some texture and dimension to your portraits. In the summer, though, it might be too hot to comfortably wear layers.

You can still incorporate some very light layers like a thin and breezy shawl. Another option, though, is to choose clothes that have some texture in them already. Some favorites are lace, smocking, and ruching.

Family Photo Wardrobe Planning Made Easy

I know it can be difficult and stressful to figure out a wardrobe for your family photos, and that’s why I’ll take all that stress off your hands! By the time I’ve left your consultation, we’ll have all these details figured out and you can simply relax and get ready for the big day. Book your photo session and let’s get started!
